Splish, Splash I Was Taking a Bath...

'Long about a Saturday night...

I can remember riding with a babysitter downtown one afternoon. As we flipped through the radio stations, I sang along to song after song after song. She started testing me, "Do you know this one?" I'd sing. She'd change the station, "This one?" I'd sing. She'd flip the station again. "You can't know this one." I'd sing along again. "Quick. Sing." And I would. I just knew songs... oldies, newbies... It didn't matter. I could belt them out. In college I prided myself on my CD collection, and my friend Katie and I took our affection for all things musical to new levels. It wasn't enough to like Led Zeppelin. We had to knooooowwww LZ. From watching The Song Remains the Same more times than is healthy to watching the same few bands enough to go beyond being a groupie... I just liked music. I loved music. All kinds. But something has changed. Drastically. And I'm a little embarrrased.

I don't know new music like I used to. I don't knoooow bands the way I once did. I even listen to the radio. I even enjoy listening to John Tesh. I think all of that hit home as I was trying to be a better blogger. (Shoot, if people can make over $100k by blogging, I need to hit it a little harder. ) I wanted to blog about the changes in our bathroom, and I couldn't come up with a song from the last ten years. And I had a mini breakdown. I'm definitely past having a quarter-life crisis. I guess that means I'm well on my way to a third-life crisis? I'm getting old. I don't know music. We're doing things like saving money for a "rainy day," clipping coupons, shopping for furniture and... and... listening to John Tesh instead of some new, edgy band from some underground music label.

So I guess this definitely can't be a blog about how cool we are. I guess it's more about how cool I'm not. (I can't include Todd in the uncool category because I'm sure he fancies himself cool.) I don't reckonI was ever very cool at all, but I sure could hide behind a blanket of cool music knowledge. All those days are gone, and here I am trying to come up with a blog title and all of my ideas seem terminally uncool. I seriously considered subscribing to CMJ just so I won't look like such a total tool and then I wondered... I don't even know if CMJ exists anymore.

So this post will just have to be a throwback. And if you see some post referencing some super hip, en vogue, not mainstream band... well, you'll know I've caved. I've downloaded all of the songs on CMJ just to be sure that I'm not blogging from here with one foot in the grave...

I'll work on bathroom pictures. Soon. Todd's actually installing some hardware as I type...
